Building a healthy breakfast

When people ask me what meal do I enjoy the most, I enthusiastically reply with – BREAKFAST! Why? Breakfast is easy and fun to prepare, provides excellent nourishment for the body early on which ultimately sets you up for a good day.

The best combination for optimum nourishment involves the macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins and fats along with many other important nutrient compounds and phytochemicals. These are all necessary for maintaining good health.

A wholesome breakfast should consist of, at the very least, high quality protein – either from plant or animal sources, some carbohydrates – preferably lower glycemic varieties with fibre and healthy fats. Ideally, included in your dish should be foods that contain high amounts of phytochemicals. Colourful, wholesome fresh foods are the easiest and most effective strategy to adding nutrients and which will also add richness and flavour.
